It seems to me that there is a relatively straightforward explanation
of humor as a useful trait,
so useful that it was selected for in our evolutionary history.
I think that humor plays a role in promoting learning.
One of the defining properties of humor is that it is pleasurable.
I believe that humor is a means of providing ourselves positive reinforcement
when we recognize incongruity,
and reinforces that recognition.
So when we see our father make a funny face we laugh.
