Why did humor evolve?

Given that we as humans all share a sense of humor, and assuming that something so pervasive must have been built into us by an evolutionary process, why is humor successful?

It seems to me that there is a relatively straightforward explanation of humor as a useful trait, so useful that it was selected for in our evolutionary history.

I think that humor plays a role in promoting learning. One of the defining properties of humor is that it is pleasurable. I believe that humor is a means of providing ourselves positive reinforcement when we recognize incongruity, and reinforces that recognition.

So when we see our father make a funny face we laugh. This view of humor provides insight into many of the paradoxes of humor, from slapstick to puns, why jokes are funniest the first time and get less funny each time following. What children find funny at different ages. Why does humor so often involve other people's pain or embarrasment? Why is there so much bathroom humor? Is any subject immune from humor?
